When the temperature drops - you’ll be able to warm yourself with the blazing beats and sizzling hot vocals of my latest mix - Lollipop’s Winter Solstice: Equinoctial Dance Mix 2.009.

This continuous dance mix honors the winter solstice which occurs at the instant when the Sun’s position in the sky is at its greatest angular distance on the other side of the equatorial plane from the observer. Worldwide, interpretation of the event has varied from culture to culture, but most cultures hold recognition of rebirth, involving holidays, festivals, gatherings, rituals or other celebrations. Celebrating the winter solstice is an ancient idea older than written history. The harvest was in yet it was not yet time to plant again. People were stuck indoors with each other between two seasons of heavy work - the timing seemed perfect for a festival! Early Egyptian and Persian traditions merged in ancient Rome into a festival for the god of seed-time, Saturn. The people gave themselves up to wild joy - feasting, giving gifts and decorating their homes with greenery (sound familiar?) As the old year died, rules of ordinary living were relaxed. During the winter solstice festivals the usual order of the year was suspended: businesses, courts and schools were closed; grudges/quarrels forgotten; and even wars were interrupted or postponed while cross-dressing, masquerades and merriment of all kinds prevailed. As Roman culture became more licentious, so did the celebrations.

It is in this joyous spirit that I created this mix which has all the hottest tunes that will be packing dance floors this winter. Included are the season’s essential remixers turning out some new pop flavors with absolutely ALL the dancefloor divas in attendance, seamlessly mixed into a frothy concoction to take you on a mystical musical journey. I know you’ll love it!

As a very, very special treat - I’m proud to be able to debut and share this new classic in Chill compilations, Andrew Sonic’s Global Grooves 2008.

I have to confess, this is one of Andrew Sonic’s most comprehensive mixes I’ve heard to date. He scoured the globe to gather the planet’s finest down-tempo music (I didn’t even know Greece produced such tracks). The end result is one of those rare “more than the sum of it’s parts” creation. I’ve had the beta version of this mix in my CD player for 6 weeks already and I still love it, finding nuances like trippy Arabic percussion patterns, Chinese and Polynesian instrumentation, and Indian and Brazilian vocal parts intertwined into one of the most creative mixes I’ve ever heard. Inspired by a recent, too-much-fun Palm Springs weekend (and a sexy blond from Montreal), this mix is cued up and ready to entertain you poolside, at the beach, or while you imagine yourself soaking up the warm golden sun.

While creating this set, I tried to include toe-tapping, sing-along favorites, new and old… put in a slightly twisted context to keep them all sounding fresh and uniquely “Lollipop”. I transferred several of these masterpieces direct from my own original vinyl copies just to include in this mix.

The legend continues…

It has been two decades since I produced my last “Top Tune Medley”. My previous medleys have traveled the world and are even featured in a full color, printed, historical reference book “The Bootleg Guide to Disco Acetates , Funk, Rap & Disco Medleys”.

It is sure an honor to have my work immortalized in the American Library of Congress! Many things have changed in the club/music scene. It is my opinion that the iconic medley is gone forever. Back in the day, there was usually only one club version of a song released. When you were in a club and heard a few familiar notes of your favorite jam - you became euphoric! All it took was a few recognizable notes and you knew you were about to enjoy a favorite club anthem. Nowadays crowds aren’t really sure what they are dancing to until the vocals start. At last count, Britney Spears’ “Gimme More” had no less than 38+ remixes! The iconic version of a song is dead. RIP. With the fracturing of the dance music market into so many sub-genres, it was a challenge to select what I felt was either the most recognizable dance mix of a song or the version that was able to retain the same vibe as the one I usually spin.

The other big challenge for this production was the current use of extended no-beat breakdowns. In the context of a medley that moves along so quickly, breaks are a real energy killer. Unfortunately another popular trend is to place most of the recognizable vocals in this beat-less break then follow that with some instrumental “electrified” beats (you know who you are!). For these reasons, a majority of tracks used had additional studio production added so they’d be suitable in the context of my medley. Most of the versions of these songs only exist in DJ Lollipop’s world, which of course only adds more interest and is another reason to listen louder and more intently!

Since I am so blessed to have “Lollipop” fans literally all over the world, I took a global approach to this musical production. Great dance music transcends language & cultural barriers. Get ready to shake that thang! I worked hard to create a classic mix that accurately represents 2007, & will stay relevant, lasting as long as the first medley I did in my bedroom studio way back in 1981. This summer, my partner Allan and I traveled to New York on an art trip where we were invited to PETER MAX’s office for a private party. There we enjoyed seeing the inner sanctum of one of America’s cultural legends. I was absolutely thrilled to see so many large pieces of his work and his collection of eclectic souveniers which included President Clinton’s saxaphone, a full sized fiberglass cow, a 6′ tall soda pop bottle and the signed piano from ‘Ringo Starr’ all glowing in psychedelic colors painted by the man himself.

The best part of this experience was being invited into PETER MAX’s personal painting studio by Peter himself. He was warm and genuine as he welcomed me by shaking my hand and showing me where he creates his art. He showed me his painting easels, brushes, paints and the DJ booth he has set up in the corner of the room. TURNTABLES! lol - apparently he likes to paint accompanied by a musical muse and has someone come in and keep the tunes going for him while other members of the entourage jam on bongos and other percussion instruments. GROOVY COOL!!!!!!!!

I promised Peter that I would send him some music. I created the MAX MIX for him to paint to (and you get to share and enjoy it too!) I hope this brings back warm memories and inspires Mr. Max the way his independant spirit and creativity inspires me. When putting this together, I imagined that I was spinning at a “Freak Out” .

The local teenage haunt in Harwood Heights, Illinois was the Hub Axle. Known by most as the BEST ROLLERSKATING RINK EVER! To this day, I’ve never seen a rink that could compare to it’s size. It was twice as big as it’s closest competitor (Chicago’s Rainbow Roller Rink on Clark Street) and it is missed and mourned by everyone who was a regular.

This mix reflects the most magical time in my life. This was when the seeds of the realization that I could mix records for a crowd were planted. Weekdays existed to only fill the void between my next visit to the rink for a speedy whip around it’s glorious wood floor. We waited in long lines in 3 feet of snow to get into the Hub’s disco rollerskating on Friday nights and Saturday nights. What a thrill! The energy and heat that radiated from that place literally steamed up all the windows. The fantastic lighting - awesome sound system. Brilliant!!

I recently rented a DAT machine (very 80’s) and transfered some old DAT’s that had studio production on them from when I also did production. I found a glorious medley I thought you would enjoy. This one is all 1987 club hits that I was spinning at the time. I now do digital editing and it’s funny to think that I originally put this together on a Tascam 4 track by just overlaying vinyl records and using a razor blade and tape to physically cut and edit it together! Oh my did it take a lot of time!!!!! It’s so much easier now.

I thought I’d share one of my “most extreme” projects with you. This was the second bootleg - record that I put out. It was released in the beginning of 1983. At the time, I was spinning in Chicago at three different clubs… a straight club, a gay club and a black club. I loved it! Each club had it’s own format and hits and very few crossed over. I played down tempo funk and R&B at a huge straight/black club on Michigan Ave, pop and disco at a straight/white club on Division Street and high energy and new wave at a chic, trendy gay/white club on Oak Street.

Back in the early 80’s, the night clubs in Chicago did not cater to mixed groups of clientele yet…but the music did start to bring diverse groups of people together. Some tunes would cross-over from one crowd to another like The Message by Grandmaster Flash which I played for months in the black club before it crossed over to white clubs, or Native Love by Divine which was a smash at the gay club before it crossed over to the straight clubs. In hindsight, the black clubs and gay clubs helped make songs pop crossovers. I kept this in mind when arranging the song order. I tried something new in this production - I used every dance hit that came out in 1982 -every single one of them. Black, white, straight, gay - any tune that made a crowd dance - regardless of it’s makeup, was included. This led to some very eclectic (and surprisingly fun) song transitions.

Like my other medley, this was all done with a pair of Technics 1200’s, a TEAC two track recorder, a razor blade and miles and miles of tape. When this was originally released on vinyl, the medley was broken up into two sections for a twelve inch “A” and “B” side. Here they have been edited together for your non- stop enjoyment.

Many of the songs in this production still pack a dance floor today - while others have faded almost into oblivion. It’s a good thing they are represented here and their place in dance music history accounted for. I know you will love listening to this and I hope it bring back some great memories! For those of you too young to have experienced this in the clubs… too bad - it was an naive, adventurous, awesome time for music and probably the most memorable and magical time in my life.

 The 1981 Top Tune Medley is the first record I ever made. It is a collection of all the big dancefloor filling hits from my first nightclub in Chicago called “POETS” on 9 West Division Street.

When I produced this first medley, I was still learning all the tricks of editing. Also, all the songs used were hits during 1981. Some were released at the end of 1980, but my production was a sonic snapshot of what was packing dancefloors in Chicago that year.

I was 17 years old at the time and working with a fake ID that said I was 22 - I still can’t believe I got away with it. lol. What fun. I was so niave. I just wanted to spin records for a packed dancefloor. I hope this brings back lots of great memories for you. I bet it will!
